John Toohey Chambers is named in honour of one of Australia’s foremost jurists and former Justice of the High Court, the late Honourable John Toohey AC QC.
The Chambers opened in Darwin in 1998 and were officially opened on 25 September 1999 with Justice Toohey in attendance as guest of honour. Five members of the independent bar currently practice at John Toohey Chambers. The Chambers are capable of servicing requirements for trial/appellate appearances and opinion work across the whole of the Northern Territory, and interstate, in all Courts, Tribunals, Boards and Commissions.
John Toohey Chambers acknowledge the distinguished service of the late Honourable Justice John Toohey AC QC. As well as being appointed to the High Court, His Honour also served on the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and was the inaugural Aboriginal Land Commissioner. Throughout the course of his career Justice Toohey exemplified the finest traditions of the legal profession and was a distinguished jurist. He had a special interest in upholding the law in remote areas of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The barristers of John Toohey Chambers are proud that Justice Toohey granted us permission to use his name. We are committed to delivering a quality of service that reflects the honour bestowed upon us.
His Honour is deeply missed by all members of Chambers and we continue to strive to honour his name and the finest traditions that he brought to the Bar and to the practice of law.
