As well as being appointed to the High Court, Justice Toohey also served on the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and was the inaugural Aboriginal Land Commissioner.
Throughout the course of his career Justice Toohey exemplified the finest traditions of the legal profession and was a distinguished jurist. He had a special interest in upholding the law in remote areas of the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
